Making a cartoon exhibition of myself

For the past two weekends I took part in Art Walk Weekends here in Portobello, Edinburgh. I was displaying my cartoons from Private Eye, Big Issue amongst others. It’s the type of festival where local artists exhibit in spaces or open the doors of their studios and workplaces to the public for viewings and tours.

Usually I am one of the people walking up and down the streets, popping into houses trying to see everything (Gotta catch them all!). But this year I joined 69 other artists with a vast range of talents and held my first solo exhibition at my co-working space ‘Tribe Porty’. Usually if my cartoons are in an exhibition, it’s as part of a group such as the Professional Cartoonists Organisation or the Cartoonists Club of Great Britain.

I wasn’t quite sure how it would pan out and if my work would be a good fit for the festival alongside all those other ‘proper’ artists! But hey, that’s the just the usual Cartoonist doubt talking. As it turned out hundreds came along over our three days at Tribe and I had an absolute ball meeting and chatting to the people as I sat at my little table. Some of them even bought stuff…. some of them even laughed! I was lucky enough to share a venue with a Watercolourist, a Weaver and a Sculptor who became great new pals by the time it had all ended and we hope we’ll assemble as Art Walk Avengers again next year.

Thanks so much if you happen to be one of the people who came along and made it such a great experience. I’ll definitely do it again! I need the validation!

Right then, next stop… The Lakes International Comic Art Festival in Kendal! I will be on a Comics Market table with the Cartoonists Club on October 3^rd and 4^th.
